Airlie Beach Day Dive Trips
Airlie Beach day dive trips provide visitors with a brilliant way to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. How do we know? Dive in Australia’s Steve Brady has done over 600 dives on the Great Barrier Reef. He has travelled the length of Queensland to see and do the best dive sites, to offer you the best advice to maximize your reef experience.
Airlie Beach is perhaps best known as being the coastal gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. The islands themselves are stunning and an attraction in their own right; they include, but are not limited to, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and more.
This area is also home to part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which stretches along most of Queensland’s eastern coastline, and there’s two fantastic Airlie Beach day dive trips, which will take you to the centre of the reef action.
Certified divers will be able to do a maximum of two (2) dives on an Airlie Beach day dive trip and will be required to show proof of certification. Pending the tour you choose, you may or may not visit the famous Whitehaven Beach (no diving here).
Introductory divers (people wanting to try diving for the first time, but have no experience or certification) can book introductory dives on an Airlie Beach day dive trip. All equipment, instruction and guides are included in the price.
When is the best time to visit? Don’t be limited by your itinerary, diving the Great Barrier Reef is perfect all year round! Water temperatures around Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands vary from 20 to 28 degrees (Celsius), so it’s pretty comfortable for most people, no matter the season.
Airlie Beach Day Dive Trip Destinations
Airlie Beach day dive trips visit the Great Barrier Reef. There are a few day trip operators providing this service and they provide different experiences. You have the option to visit sheltered bay sites off one of the stunning Whitsunday Islands, with the exact location being chosen to maximize experience pending weather and day, the other visits an outer reef pontoon. Additional information below.
If time allows and you want to extend your reef stay and play from Airlie Beach, then we strongly recommend considering a 3 day / 2 night or 3 day / 3 night liveaboard dive trip. Further information is provided in the liveaboard section of this site.
The Whitsunday Islands Group incorporates a range of islands, which vary in size, location and topography. The Whitsunday Dive Adventures operation provides Airlie Beach day dive tours, which depart Airlie Beach and include a visit to the stunning Whitehaven Beach, before visiting a protected bay off one of the islands, for snorkeling and diving. The exact bay is chosen on the day, to maximise experience, pending weather and conditions.
Certified divers can do two (2) dives on this Airlie Beach day dive tour. All of the dives are guided by experienced scuba instructors, who will show you the highlights of the site/s. All of the equipment is included in the dive price. This tour departs at around 7.45am and returns between 4.30pm – 5.30pm. Guest numbers are limited to 35. Water / dive depth varies from 5m to 20m, but does not usually exceed 18m. Introductory diving is also available on this trip.
Outer Reef Pontoon
Airlie Beach is the mainland launch pad for the Whitsunday Islands, but one operator runs daily Airlie Beach day dive tours which depart from here and head out to an outer reef pontoon. What’s the benefits of a pontoon over the islands? For divers, the key here is visibility. You will have better visibility on the outer reef pontoon due to its geographic distance from the sandy beaches of the islands.
This trip departs Airlie Beach at 8am, returning at 6.10pm. The trip stops to pick up and drop off passengers from Daydream and Hamilton Islands, before pushing on to the outer reef pontoon, and is completed on high speed, high passenger (when compared to the other day trip option) catamarans. At the pontoon, guests can choose to participate in a range of activities (some included in the tour price, some extra) including a visit to the underwater observatory, snorkeling, semi-submersible tours, massage and scenic helicopter flights.
Certified divers can book one (1) or two (2) dives. All dives are guided. There is even the option to do a night dive here, should you choose the overnight accommodation package on the pontoon. Ask us for more information.

Airlie Beach Day Dive Trips versus Liveaboard Trips
Airlie Beach liveaboard dive trips are suited to those who want to experience more of the reef and more diving. Day dive trips allow you to do a maximum of two (2) guided dives. Liveaboard trips provide the opportunity to do more than that, as well as some night diving. Check out our Airlie Beach liveaboard dive trip page for more information.
