Program Outline

This PADI-accredited Divemaster program, offered through Byron Bay Dive Centre, takes participants from beginner to expert in five steps:

  • Open Water Diver
  • Advanced Diver

You will reach the leadership level of Divemaster through structured pool, open water, and classroom instruction. While the primary goal of the program is to prepare you for a career with the diving community, you will also develop self- confidence, public speaking, and social skills essential to any career you may ultimately choose.

 

Program Itinerary

Stage 1: OPEN WATER DIVER

Step into the Spectacular Underwater World!

In this first stage of the program, you will learn recreational diving theory through classroom & pool instruction on campus, and then apply this knowledge in 6 open water dives conducted in the company of Julian Rocks' vast array of marine life!

In just five days you will be fully certified to explore the awesome underwater world of fish, coral reefs, shipwrecks, caves, and more. You will also learn essential procedures for diving safely and responsibly while experiencing this totally new and exciting world!

Duration: 5 Days, 6 Dives YOU CAN: Dive up to 18m.

 

Stage 2: ADVANCED OPEN WATER

Improve Your Diving Abilities

In the second stage of the program, you will learn the skills you need to take on more challenging diving situations, including deep dives, night dives, underwater navigation, search and recovery, and more!

This course consists of at least 30 hours of instruction using the latest study guides and DVD programs, and multiple dives suited to your interests within the categories of:

  • Underwater photography

  • Drift diving
  • Underwater navigation

  • Search & salvage diving
  • Shore diving

Stage 3: RESCUE DIVER

Essential skills for Dive Leadership

In this stage of the program you will learn the skills to effectively manage many dive emergencies, a benefit to you and to everyone you will dive with throughout the rest of your life!

Diver stress and the resulting panic are the leading causes of diving accidents and emergencies; through this course you will be equipped to prevent such emergencies when possible and handle any emergencies that may occur. You will learn the theory behind recognizing stress and effectively dealing with it and then put that theory to practice in real-life scenarios.

This is a highly interactive course emphasizing teamwork. You will benefit firsthand from the 20+ years of experience that Byron Bay Dive Centre and its instructors have in recognizing and handling diving emergencies - this is one area where the skills that you learn must be second-to-none!

Duration: 5 Days, 6 Dives YOU CAN: Effectively manage potentially life-threatening dive emergencies.

 

Stage 4: FIRST AID & O2 PROVIDER

Essential skills for Life

A prerequisite for the completion of Rescue Diver certification, this internationally recognised and Australian Workcover approved First Aid course will provide you with invaluable emergency response knowledge. You will learn skills to approach, assess, treat conditions, and administer O2when necessary - essential skills for diving rescue as well as other first aid situations you may encounter in any walk of life!

Duration: 5 Days, 4 Dives YOU CAN: Perform Basic Life Support and first aid response procedures at home and the workplace (necessary for Rescue Diver certification).

 

Stage 5: DIVEMASTER

Transforming the Adventure into a Career

In the final stage of the program, you will receive a wealth of practical experience and knowledge in the dive industry. Through a finely tuned blend of academic sessions mixed with practical application you will achieve the status of Dive Master, the first step in turning your diving interest into a rewarding career! At this point your presentation and instruction skills will be honed, you will have individual and group assignments, and you will take the Dive Master examination at the end of the course.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

Yes, the minimum age is 18.

What are the Australian Visa requirements?

The minimum visa you will be required to hold is the 3 month Tourist Visa. However, if you wish to continue your travels around Australia with the opportunity to supplement your travel funds through incidental employment you will be required to hold a valid Australian Working Visa. Do I need any form of dive certification?

No form of dive certification is required to start the course. However, if you are joining the program already holding an Open Water/ Advance or Rescue ticket, the relevant paper work, card and log book will be needed You are required to complete the application form included in this pack. It is also necessary for you to be able to swim at least 400m in under 20 mins.

Are any medical checks necessary?

We advise you to have a medical check for diving before departing for the course. You will still be required to have an Australian Standards Dive Medical on arrival which ADA will arrange on your behalf.

Who is responsible for my travel arrangements?

It is your responsibility to make your way to Brisbane, Coolangatta (Gold Coast) or Ballina Airport where a member of the ADA team to transfer you to Byron Bay will meet you. There are many international flights direct to Brisbane or Sydney. There are connecting domestic flights from Brisbane to Coolangatta, and from Sydney to Ballina, which is the closest airport to Byron Bay.

Is accommodation provided?

You will be staying above the Byron Bay Dive Centres in its self- contained, on site lodge. All linen, kitchen ware and laundry facilities are provided. You'll be able to watch the sunset sitting in the hammocks enjoying your BBQ!

What is the cost of living like in Australia?

Your main outgoings will be food and entertainment. We understand everyone varies in terms of tastes, requirements, social life and spending habits. Although the ADA expects your primary commitment to be the course Byron offers plenty of entertainment from having a schooner at the local pub with live music to surfing the breaks at The Pass.

Do I need my own dive equipment?

Full diving equipment will be provided for you and is included in the cost of the course. For full details see the information page. All you are required to bring is your swimmers and a towel.

Is insurance required?

We suggest you talk to your booking agent or travel agent regarding insurance. You will be required to have a policy that covers diving to 30 meters. For a more dive- specific insurance policy go to www.daneurope.org. DO NOT TAKE THE RISK OF TRAVELLING WITHOUT INSURANCE.

Deposits are non-refundable. Payment of a 20% deposit enables the ADA and/or its booking agent to hold a reservation for you. Full payment must be received 60 days prior to the start of the course.

What are your cancellation policies?

If you cancel your placement you may be entitled to a refund. The cancellation conditions which apply are set out in the Terms and Conditions of booking.

Terms and Conditions of Booking

Booking: Initial enquires may be made by writing, telephone, facsimile or e-mail.

The booking must be made by completing an official A.D.A Booking Form including the Medical Questionnaire.

Confirmation:

A.D.A will acknowledge in writing receipt of the Booking Form and

Medical Questionnaire. On receipt of the deposit we will issue a confirmation which shall be treated as an acceptance to the A.D.A. The confirmation letter / email will state the final balance that must be paid.

Deposits: Payment of a 20% deposit enables the A.D.A and/or booking agent to hold a reservation for you. Full payment must be received 60 days prior to the start of the course. Deposits are non- refundable.

Final Payment: Final payment is due 60 days prior to the start of the course.  No enrolments will be issued or confirmed until our office and/or the booking agent receive final payment. If the A.D.A does not receive the deposit or the balance of the payment for the A.D.A program on or before the given dates this will be deemed as a cancellation of participation by you.

Medical: If you are unable to continue with the course through omission of any known medical condition that is later confirmed through the Dive Medical AS 4005.1, A.D.A cannot refund the loss incurred or refund the cost of the program. Therefore, we advise you have a medical check for diving before final payment is made.

Cancellations: The amount of refund in the event of a cancellation depends on when the A.D.A receives notification of the cancellation. 60 days prior to the course start date full refund less the deposit 30 days prior to the course start date 50% refund less the deposit 14 days prior to the course start date 25% refund less the deposit 7 days prior to the course start date no refund

Cancellations by the A.D.A: We reserve the right to make minor changes to the A.D.A Program but if the A.D.A cancels or makes significant changes to the for any reasons after we have confirmed a place the A.D.A will offer the you the choice of the altered A.D.A Program or a full refund of money. A.D.A reserves the right to cancel the program after it has started due to serious and unforeseeable circumstances. In such a case the amount of any refund will be considered depending on the circumstances of the cancellation. The A.D.As liability in the event of cancellation at any time for any reason will not extend to the consequential losses, costs, and expenses as a result of a cancellation.
