What wildlife can be seen on Heron Island?
Heron Island is a popular breeding point for Loggerhead and Green Sea turtles that return each year to lay their eggs in the same spot where they hatched up to 30 years ago – an incredibly rare opportunity! Turtle breeding season is from September to March with hatching from November to February - strict guidelines in place to protect these vulnerable species during their breeding season. However turtles, dolphins, tropical fish, rays, reef sharks and marine invertebrates can be seen all year round.
Throughout June you may see Humpback and Minke whales migrating on their annual journey up north. Another crowd pleaser on the island are the many native bird species including the Black Noddy and the Wedge-tailed Shearwater and about 19 other species, during nesting season people are well out-numbered by the birds!
Snorkelling and Diving on Heron Island
Heron Island is surrounded by pristine waters teeming with tropical reef fish, turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and an endless variety of marine invertebrates – perfect for beginner snorkelers to experienced divers!
There are 20 dive sites around the island as close as 5 mins from the shore, with an average depth of between 5m - 25m. The abundance of marine life thrives in the many coral gardens, bommies and pinnacles around the island where 72% of coral species on the Great Barrier Reef can be found.
Heron Bommie is the island’s signature dive site consisting of six large coral heads ranging from 5m down to 18m deep. Dive with majestic mantas and eagle rays, swim over forests of branching staghorn coral through flittering colours of damselfish down to the sneaky painted crayfish. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the occasional wobbegong shark or “fatty” the local flowery cod!
Discover Coral Canyons, Heron or Wisteri reefs whilst snorkelling one of the three daily snorkel tours at 9am, 11am, and 2:30pm daily where the experienced staff will introduce you to hidden nudibranchs, pelagics, schools of fish, reef sharks and possibly an olive sea snake!
