Benefits of a Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach Liveaboard Dive Trips versus Day Trips
Airlie Beach is a coastal township, providing the gateway to Queensland’s famous Whitsundays. What are the Whitsundays? A collection of 74 tropical islands located within the Great Barrier Reef. Some of the more well-known islands include Hamilton, Daydream and South Molle. While some have resorts, others remain unpopulated and pristine, with fringing coral reefs awaiting your exploration.
While Airlie Beach is close to the islands, it’s further away from the Outer Great Barrier Reef than some other coastal ports, such as Cairns and Townsville. Cruising time to the Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach is approximately 2 hours each way. This means if you want to explore the Outer Great Barrier Reef as well as fringing reefs, then it needs to be done on a liveaboard trip, ensuring there is plenty of time for travel, diving and relaxing. There simply is not enough time to do it all on an Airlie Beach day trip.
The other benefits of choosing an Airlie Beach Whitsundays liveaboard dive trip, include being able to combine diving with island exploration and in some cases, a little bit of kayaking!
Airlie Beach Whitsunday Liveaboard Dive Trip Destinations
Airlie Beach has two preferred liveaboard dive trip operators. Both of them will visit the best locations to maximize your experience, pending weather and conditions. You are guaranteed to stop by some of the famous Whitsunday Islands, with time to explore them both above and below the water. The islands are sheltered and provide a secure place to sail and play.
As both Airlie Beach Whitsunday liveaboard dive trip operators utilise sail boats, they cannot guarantee a visit to the Outer Great Barrier Reef. While it is their intention to provide at least one visit to this destination, they are guided by the weather and conditions at the time. This means they are also not able to promise a night dive.
The Whitsunday Islands are made up of 74 Great Barrier Reef islands. They have shallow waters and fringing reefs, with depths generally between 10 – 12m. With over 100 chartered dive sites in the area, you can experience a few different diving styles and experiences, including swim throughs, caves and exploring coral gardens and walls. The water temperature tends to be a constant 25 degrees, all year round.
This is a perfect destination for those who want to combine diving with relaxing and above water activities. It is most suited for beginner divers, who will appreciate the relatively shallow depths and protected waters. The focus here is about the visit, as much as the diving, maximizing your experience exploring all the different facets the Whitsunday Islands have to offer. Your Airlie Beach Whitsunday liveaboard dive trip will include time exploring islands and relaxing on beaches.
Bait Reef is located off Hamilton Island, west of Hook and Hardy Reefs. It’s probably the favoured Outer Great Barrier Reef location in this destination and boasts a number of dive sites and experiences. Sites include the ‘Stepping Stones’ ‘Manta Ray Drop Off’ and ‘Gary’s Lagoon’.
