Cairns Liveaboard Diving Trips (Queensland)

Liveaboard dive trips depart Cairns every single day. Can be booked anywhere from 2 Day / 1 Night up to 7 Nights. Comfortable cabins and fully inclusive packages and prices. Destinations include Great Barrier Reef, Ribbon Reef, Osprey Reef and Coral Sea.

Diving in Cairns is made easy with the Great Barrier Reef located right on the door step of this adventure based Tropical North Queensland tourism destination. Diving the Great Barrier Reef on overnight liveaboard trips caters to divers of all experience levels, offering a greater diving experience with night diving, early morning dives and late afternoon dives.

Most trips visit the amazing Great Barrier Reef, while some go further afield to the remote, deep reefs of the Coral Sea.  The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is on the bucket list for most divers. It is recognised as one of the world’s most unique and amazing marine spectacles. Extending for 2,300 kilometers along the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, the GBR consists of about 2,900 individual reefs and covers an area the size of the United Kingdom.  Its ecosystem supports the greatest concentration of life on this planet. Its resident marine life includes 1,500 species of fish, 350 different kinds of coral, 4000 species of mollusks and 10,000 species of sponges.  It also provides breeding areas for humpback whales, sea turtles, dugong and seabirds.  Hundreds of species of algae, including seaweeds, also live on the reef as a vital part of the reef system.

When is the best time to visit?
Diving the Great Barrier Reef is perfect all year round! Water temperatures range from 22 degrees to 29 degrees and operators provide wet and lycra suits on all liveaboard dive trips.

Benefits of Cairns Liveaboard Dive Trips versus Day Trips
We believe the best way for certified divers to explore the Great Barrier Reef, is to spend more than one day diving.  You will get to see and experience so much more staying overnight.  Early morning dives and night diving are my personal favourite times to scuba dive.

If you’re a new diver, you will see your confidence levels and diving skills increase dramatically on a Cairns liveaboard dive trip, because you are doing multiple dives over multiple days.  Further, diving at different times during the day, allows you to experience different weather conditions, tides and currents, which builds your confidence in the water.

All operators offer you the opportunity to complete your Advanced Open Water, Nitrox and Rescue Dive Course during a Cairns liveaboard dive trip.  Contact us today, to help you make the right choice and book the best Cairns liveaboard dive trip for you.  You will not be disappointed and really enjoy the experience of seeing the Great Barrier Reef over a 24 hour cycle.

Cairns Liveaboard Dive Trip Destinations
Cairns has the greatest number of choices available when it comes experiencing the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns liveaboard dive trips offer the ultimate diving adventure. Pick the destination to suit your skills and experience.

Cairns Outer Great Barrier Reef
Cairns liveaboard dive trips depart the Reef Fleet Terminal, to the Outer Great Barrier Reef, each and every day.  The Outer Great Barrier Reef is approximately 60km offshore from Cairns and travel time varies from 60 minutes to 2 hours, pending operator.  Water / dive depth varies anywhere from 5m to 20m, but does not usually exceed 18m, making this destination perfect for those with an Open Water Certification.  The Outer Great Barrier Reef offers a range of diving experiences and locations.

Ribbon Reefs
The far northern Ribbon Reefs are some of the most pristine, remote and untouched reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. Due to their distance from Cairns, a liveaboard trip to the Ribbon Reefs is a minimum of 3 nights (includes scenic flight between Cairns and Lizard Island) and maximum of 7 nights (entire trip spent on the boat). The Ribbons are home to some of Australia’s best dive sites, including but not limited to the Cod Hole, Steve’s Bommie and Lighthouse Bommie. The boats and dive operators who visit here are professional and these trips will create memories to last a lifetime.

Coral Sea and Osprey Reef
Liveaboard dive trips to Osprey Reef and the Coral Sea are only suitable for divers with Advanced dive certification (and above) and experience. These waters are remote and currents can be strong. Dive depth and time is limited only by your experience and certification. Coral walls drop off up to 1,000m and there’s excellent visibility. These trips almost always include a shark feed dive at North Horn, which is rated in the world’s top 10 shark dive destinations.  Due to their distance from Cairns, a liveaboard trip to the Coral Sea is a minimum of 4 nights (includes scenic flight between Cairns and Lizard Island) and maximum of 7 nights (entire trip spent on the boat).

Wherever you go, a consistent factor is the amazing diversity of marine life. You may encounter sea turtles, stingrays, sea sharks, a range of fish and maybe even a Dwarf Minke Whale (seasonal). Depending on the operator and location, you may experience swim throughs, wall dives and exploring coral gardens.  The water temperature varies between 22 degrees to 29 degrees and all operators provide wetsuits / lycra suits for certified divers.
