Mooloolaba diving is most famous for one thing, the HMAS Brisbane. This is Australia’s only purpose designed wreck dive. As such, it offers divers a few major benefits, including but not limited to, convenient access to the wreck, both above and below the water. There’s also offshore reefs with swim throughs, caves and pinnacles. Depending on the time of year you choose to go Mooloolaba diving, you might even be able to pair the wreck and/or reefs with a swim with migrating Humpback Whales. Mooloolaba diving caters to divers of all experience levels, from the beginner to the advanced. Dive depth varies 5 – 20m.
Where is Mooloolaba?
Right in the heart of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. It’s about an hour drive north of Brisbane’s airport or 20 minutes from the Sunshine Coast regional airport. As a destination, Mooloolaba offers fantastic beaches, suitable for swimming and surfing, and a range of accommodation, dining and shopping experiences.
HMAS Brisbane
HMAS Brisbane is approximately 2.9 nautical miles offshore. It’s a decommissioned guided missile destroyer, which was scuttled on 31 July 2005. The forward decks are 12m underwater, the stern is 18m. Dive inside and outside; coral cover, marine life and artefacts.
Other Day Dive Trips
Mooloolaba diving can also be booked to explore a range of local offshore reefs, including Flinders Reef. These can’t be completed on the same day as HMAS Brisbane trips, but can be booked on subsequent days, providing a complete Mooloolaba diving experience.
Swim with Whales
When you aren’t diving in Mooloolaba you might like to go swimming with migrating Humpback Whales. This is one of the few places you can participate in this marine encounter in Australia. It’s strictly seasonal (July – October) and is a half day tour / experience. No diving. Just swimming.
