About your Learn to Dive Course

Complete your PADI Open Water Course with a 5 star PADI centre. The best news? This is all happens in Cairns, on the Great Barrier Reef, an icon for dive tourism worldwide. Your course includes two days at a scuba training school in Cairns city. Purpose built to make you feel very comfortable starting your new experience learning to dive. It features four classrooms and a training pool. The training pool has two shallow water areas and a 4m ‘deep’ section. This allows new divers to become comfortable with breathing underwater, before descending a little deeper to learn buoyancy and the functions of their dive equipment.  Days three and four are spent on a liveaboard vessel where you will complete your ocean dive component of your training.

Important Information – Dive Medical

If you are enrolling in an entry-level recreational diving certificate you must complete and submit the following self-assessed Open Water Course Medical Declaration form before starting your training.

If it has been identified on the stated document that you:

(a) have or have had any of the medical conditions mentioned in the medical declaration

(b) are over 45 years old

(c) have a body mass index over 30 AND a waist circumference greater than 102 cm for males and 88 cm for females

then you must have completed by a doctor the below English language Open Water Student Medical. Participant Medical Questionnaire (must be completed within 90 days of course commencement) certifying that you are medically fit to dive.

Everyone undertaking training for an entry level recreational diving certificate must be at least 10 years of age. If the diver is under 18, parental or guardian consent should be obtained for the diver to undertake training for an entry-level recreational diving certificate.

If the diver is under 12, we must be informed before the course starts, as a private instructor will be needed for the sea days.

Dive Course Program

Day 1 – Training Centre
9.00am pick-up from your city accommodation
Classroom theory.
Dive medical to AS 4005.1 (if required)
Lunch (not included)

Day 2 – Training Centre
9.00am pickup from your city accommodation
Pool training

5.00pm – Finish

* Please note on days one and two – meals, accommodation and Medical are not included. You will also at some point in the first 2 days be required to swim 200m and tread water for 10 minutes.

Day 3 – Depart for the Great Barrier Reef (Liveaboard Trip)

8am: Board day vessel (transfer vessel to OceanQuest Liveaboard)

Complete training dives 1 – 2 during the day

Enjoy a delicious lunch, then rest and relax while you are transferred to OceanQuest

Afternoon – Training dive 3

Time should be available for you to enjoy snorkelling on the reef

6.30pm: Dinner is served!

7.30pm: Enjoy our Sharks in the Dark experience as a snorkeller, or from on deck

10pm: Bar closes

Day 4

The vessel will move to a new location early in the morning with a chance to see the sunrise.

8.30am: Breakfast

9.15am: Dive briefing (Training Dive 4)

9.30am: Dive 4 – congratulations, you’re now an Open Water Diver!

11.15am: Dive 5 briefing

11.30am: Dive 5 (fun dive)

1pm: Lunch is served

1.30pm: OceanQuest begins the return trip to Cairns

4-4.30pm (approx): Arrival back in Cairns

On arrival in Cairns we will offer a complimentary luggage drop off to your hotel or our dive centre.

 


FAQ

Completed Self Assessed Medical Declaration - All scuba participants must meet medical questionnaire requirements. Some conditions or medications may prevent you from diving.
Minimum age 10 (12 for advanced course). If the diver is under 12, we must be informed before the course starts, as a private instructor will be needed for the sea days - Medical certificate if required - Ability to pass a 200m swim and 10 minute treading water test
