Where is Rainbow Beach? It’s at the top end of the Sunshine Coast, about a 3 hour drive north of Brisbane. It’s well known for its coloured sands and being the coastal gateway to Fraser Island, but divers will know it for Wolf Rock, with its squadrons of sharks and cruising rays. Wolf Rock dive depth goes beyond 18m, so you will need to have Advanced certification or be prepared to do an Adventure Dive Course to dive here.
Wolf Rock is the popular Rainbow Beach diving site and can be easily combined with day trips and longer stays to Fraser Island. That’s because Rainbow Beach is the southern gateway to the World Heritage listed Fraser Island.
Wolf Rock is a 45 minute boat ride from Rainbow Beach and is adjacent to Double Island Point. Day tours are a maximum (and minimum) of two certified dives (no introductory dives are available). The surface interval time is generally an hour and a light lunch is included. This is small group diving and recommended for divers who are experienced with and comfortable in currents. There’s some secondary sites, Round Rock and Nursery Reef, which are used for training exercises and are home to lots of interesting creatures.
