Osprey Reef dive sites are known for three things, amazing underwater visibility, coral walls which drop away to 1,000m below and sharks. Osprey Reef is located in the Coral Sea and offers very remote, deep reef diving.

Located beyond the borders of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Osprey Reef and Coral Sea diving is only accessible on a liveaboard dive trip with regular, scheduled departures from Cairns. Some of the reefs you may dive include Osprey Reef, Shark Reef, Vema Reef, Bougainville Reef and more. You can expect a range of dive experiences and landscapes.

Osprey Reef is 150km off the north-east coast of Queensland. It offers remote adventure diving at its very best. Please note due to depth and currents, diving at Osprey Reef is only suitable for divers with Advanced certification and above. Divers must book a liveaboard trip.

This is adventure diving at its best! Water depth is epic, think 1,000m wall drop offs. Currents can be strong from time to time, making this the perfect destination for Advanced scuba divers. Coral Sea diving offers a range of experiences, including drift dives, wall dives and more.

Osprey Reef dive trips depart Cairns on regular days each week. A few tour operators provide liveaboard trips and some trips will include a scenic flight to/from Cairns and Lizard Island. Osprey Reef dive trips can be combined with Great Barrier Reef trips, on a 7 day expedition.

Osprey Reef Dive Sites | What Will I See
A consistent factor of diving in the Coral Sea and on Osprey Reef is the sharks! Not to mention the outstanding visibility and giant schools of pelagic fish. Dive depth is only limited by your experience and certification. Water temperature varies between 22 degrees to 29 degrees and all operators provide wetsuits / lycra suits for certified divers.

Popular Dive Sites. There’s many famous and popular dive sites on Osprey Reef and in the Coral Sea. In fact, one of the world’s top shark dives is at North Horn and liveaboard dive operators come here and provide divers the chance to witness a shark feed. This is an amazing experience, which you will never forget. Other dive sites include North Horn Wall, Admiralty, Castles, Around the Bed, Rapid Horn, Secret Caves with its turtles and cuttlefish and False Entrance which is bursting with marine life and schools of pelagic and other fish.

• Must be a Certified Diver to book a Osprey Reef or Coral Sea dive trip.
• You will be doing deep dives (20 meters +) so being Advanced Certified is advised or completing your Advanced Certification on the trip is a great option.
• Most boats offer diving on Enriched Air (Nitrox) – Completing your course is also possible.
• Travelling alone? No problem, a dive buddy can be allocated to you.
• Liveaboard boats take anywhere from 20 – 30 guests. Ask us for more information on your vessel preference.

Holmes Reef Dive Sites – Coral Sea (Queensland)
Holmes Reef dive sites are known for three things, amazing underwater visibility, coral walls which drop away to 1,000m below and sharks. Osprey Reef is located in the Coral Sea and offers very remote, deep reef diving.

Holmes Reef, a reef system lying some 90 miles outside the Great Barrier Reef. Due to its isolation the reef has incredible visibility (almost always over 30 meters). Expect to see sharks, an abundance of sharks and large pelagic fish life. Holmes Reef like Osprey Reef is only accessible on a liveaboard dive trip with regular, scheduled departures from Cairns. Some of the reefs you may dive include Osprey Reef, Shark Reef, Vema Reef and Bougainville Reef. You can expect a range of dive experiences and landscapes.

Experiencing the Coral Sea is adventure diving at its best! With 1,000m wall drop offs provides near perfect blue water being great location for photographers. Expect to experience reasonable currents at times making this the perfect destination for Advanced scuba divers. Coral Sea diving offers a range of experiences, including drift dives, wall dives and more.

Holmes Reef dive trips depart Cairns with generally two scheduled trips each month so if you see a trip date with availability book it as they tend to fill up fast due to limited schedule trips to this location.

Only one operator in Cairns offers a dedicated trip to Holmes Reef where others running to the Coral Sea (Osprey Reef ) can visit this locate frequently although not always a scheduled stop. If weather conditions are right the Coral Sea operators will attempt to visit Holmes Reef.
