The ex-HMAS Tobruk lies on the seabed north of Hervey Bay, resting on its starboard side. The Ex-HMAS Tobruk is one of the world’s newest wreck diving sites and was officially opened for underwater exploration in late February 2019. The unexpected position of the Tobruk makes it an even more fascinating dive. Unlike any other wreck in Queensland, it provides a one-of-a-kind experience with great access and an impressive scale. The open stern doors reveal the massive main tank deck, offering an almost 120-metre swim-through like no other. Divers exploring the ship and its surroundings will encounter a rich variety of marine life. Colourful reef fish and anemones will welcome divers as they descend. You might also spot octopus, lionfish, pufferfish, and schools of baitfish as you swim through the enormous tank deck. For those experienced enough to reach the seafloor, grouper, cod, wobbegong sharks, and rays await.
The guided ex-HMAS Tobruk Dive Tour departs daily from the Boat Club Marina. The tours are operated with two high-speed dive vessels, carrying a maximum of 10 divers per trip to ensure personalised service and attention. You’ll be guided by the qualified PADI dive team, who are passionate about our marine environment and diver safety. The tour includes two dives on this mega wreck, with tanks and weights provided. A torch is recommended. Tech divers and scuba clubs are welcome at Hervey Bay Dive Centre. The total duration of this tour is 5 hours.
HMAS Tobruk (L 50) was a Landing Ship Heavy (LSH) for the Royal Australian Navy. Designed in the 1970s, she provided the Australian Army with a permanent sealift capability. The keel was laid down in Newcastle, NSW, in 1979, and the ship was launched in 1980 and commissioned in 1981. Tobruk was a multi-purpose heavy lift ship, capable of transporting soldiers, heavy vehicles, and tanks, and delivering them via landing craft or by beaching directly.
Decommissioned in July 2015, the Tobruk was secured by Queensland in late 2016. The ship was towed from Sydney to Bundaberg in December 2016, where it was prepared for scuttling in Wide Bay in June 2018.

The ex HMAS Tobruk Dive Tour is a guided marine tour within the Great Sandy Marine Park which is strictly regulated and so all instructions by the guides must be adhered too. Diving the ship is subject to change without notice, due to tides and weather conditions.
All guests participating in dive tours will be required to fill out a medical questionnaire to ensure that you have no medical problems (past or present) or taking any medication that may be contradictory to scuba diving. Some medical conditions and / or medication may prevent you from participating in the dive tour. If you are unsure about this, please discuss this with our instructors at the time of booking.
Our tour is alcohol free due to the types of activities we undertake.
All online bookings cancelled will incur a 10% administration fee. Bookings cancelled 10 days prior will incur a 20% administration fee. Bookings cancelled 48hrs prior incur a 50% administration fee. Bookings cancelled less than 24hrs prior forfeit the total cost of the booking.
If you have not dived within 12 months you maybe required to complete a Scuba Review with our chief instructor before you can dive the Tobruk. Please contact us to discuss if this the case. Certification I.D. card must be presented at check-in.
n the unlikely event that the tour has to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions, sea state or the like; Hervey Bay Dive Centre reserves the right to cancel a tour on short notice. In this situation an alternate trip may be booked or a full refund offered.
