Since its sinking in 1911, the 110-metre-long passenger ship has transformed into a thriving artificial reef, teeming with incredible marine life. While there’s no natural reef structure around it, the Yongala itself has become a magnet for biodiversity. On a single dive, you might encounter sea turtles, sea snakes, giant trevally, Queensland gropers, eagle rays, manta rays, reef sharks, and schools of tropical fish. During the cooler months, you might even spot humpback whales passing by.
The wreck lies between 15 to 29 metres deep, making it suitable for Advanced Open Water divers, though Open Water certified divers with six or more dives can explore the site when accompanied by a professional dive guide (approx. $25 extra). It’s also a perfect opportunity to tick off your Deep and Wreck Dive specialties as part of your Advanced certification.
Day dive tour departs from Townsville and offer a chance to dive this remote site, which remained untouched until its discovery in 1958. Protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act, the SS Yongala is now a living time capsule, covered in colourful corals and bursting with marine life—an experience that no serious diver should miss.

You need to be at least an Advanced Open Water diver or have an Open Water certification with proof of deep diving experience. We do offer a deep dive experience at an extra cost for those Open Waters Divers wanting to explore the wreck below their experience level. If you are not sure about your qualifications, our team are happy to advise you.
The wreck sits at a depth of approximately 30 meters, with the top of the wreck around 16 meters. Divers can explore the whole wreck within the time of two dives.
All passengers are strongly advised to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers: (i) Trip cancellation or rescheduling (ii) Lost / damaged personal belongings or equipment, due to any reason, and (iii) Evacuation and medical cover including Scuba diving. Note: In a medical emergency, any evacuation, vessel relocation or medical expenses, are the final responsibility of that passenger. Divers Alert Network (DAN) www.diversalertnetwork.org and Dive Assure www.diveassure.com offer comprehensive insurance packages specially for scuba divers.

Should a trip be cancelled or rescheduled by Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive, a full refund is available. All trips and courses are conditional on weather conditions and a minimum of 12 participants. All refund must be authorised by the management of Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive.
