REEF ENCOUNTER – VOLUNTEER PROGRAM REEF ENCOUNTER – VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

REEF ENCOUNTER – VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

How long can you stay?

After your paid guest stay, you will start as a Volunteer at approximately 2:00pm the next day.

  • Stay as a Guest for 2 days/1 night – Volunteer for 2 additional nights
  • Stay as a Guest for 3 days/2 nights – Volunteer for 3 additional nights

If you show good work ethic and can work cohesively with our crew and arriving guests, there is a chance to extend your volunteer stay once onboard (subject to availability and crew discretion).

What is included?

This is a volunteer experience, not a paid position. As a volunteer, you’ll receive complimentary:

  • Accommodation in crew quarters
  • Chef-prepared meals
  • Snorkel and/or scuba gear hire
  • Luggage storage at our office in Cairns
  • Minimum 2 water sessions per day –- if assigned duties are completed.
  • Book and pay for Snorkelling – Snorkel as a Volunteer (no scuba diving included)
  • Book and pay for Certified Diving – Snorkel and/or Certified Dives as a Volunteer (guided dives at extra cost)*
  • Book and pay for Introductory Diving – Snorkel and/or Intro Dives as a Volunteer (subject to Instructor availability)

*Guided dives can be arranged onboard for $15 per person, per dive.

What is expected?

We understand that you are on holidays; however, as a Volunteer you will be expected to work. Typical duties include:

  • Galley duties i.e. washing, drying and putting away cups, crockery and cutlery
  • Housekeeping duties i.e. vacuuming and/or cleaning shared guest areas
  • Laundry duties i.e. loading washing machines and dryers
  • Manual handling duties i.e. transferring luggage and/or boat supplies to and from vessels
  • Other duties as required

You also need to purchase a Volunteer t-shirt ($35) to wear when performing onboard duties. This helps identify you as a non-guest and is a great memento of your time on the Great Barrier Reef!

Will you get free time?

Absolutely! As long as you complete all tasks requested of you. There will be some aspects of your day that will be busier, and you will be required to work a little harder than at other times. Work hard ~ Play hard. (The Great Barrier Reef is your backyard!!!)

How can you book?

If you are interested in the Volunteer Program, please give us a quick call or email prior to making your booking on Reef Encounter Liveaboard Trips to confirm that there is space available on our Volunteer roster.

The Volunteer Program is valid for 1 year, from the first day booked as a guest and joined as a volunteer. It is subject to availability and the onboard crew’s discretion as to whether volunteers are welcomed back.

If you have any further questions about the Volunteer program, please do not hesitate to contact us.
