Full Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Rainbow Beach → Maheno Shipwreck → Eli Creek → Beachside Camp

Morning

  • Meet at 7:00 am at Freedom Hostel for a compulsory tour briefing.
  • Receive essential safety information.
  • Get organised into travel groups and arrange luggage storage.
  • Learn 4WD safety and driving techniques for K’gari (Fraser Island).
  • Depart Freedom Hostel by 9:30 am, driving ~10 minutes to the barge.
  • Enjoy the 15-minute ferry crossing, keeping an eye out for dolphins and other marine life.

Exploring K’gari

  • Drive along 75 Mile Beach, K’gari’s famous sandy highway, enjoying coastal views.
  • Stop for morning tea at one of the island’s freshwater creeks.
  • Continue north to the Maheno Shipwreck, learning about its history, including its role as a wartime hospital ship.
  • Lunch provided at a scenic spot chosen by your guide depending on location and timing.
  • Visit Eli Creek, a crystal-clear freshwater stream ideal for swimming, splashing, or relaxing in the sun.

Evening

  • Arrive at your beachside campsite, settle in, and enjoy dinner and drinks under the stars.

Day 2: Central Station → Pile Valley → Lake McKenzie → Return to Rainbow Beach

Morning

  • Enjoy a quick breakfast at camp before setting off.
  • Drive south to Eurong, then inland through changing landscapes to Central Station Rainforest.
  • Take a guided walk along Wanggoolba Creek, learning about its Indigenous significance and logging history.
  • Continue on a 1.8 km self-guided rainforest walk to Pile Valley, stopping for morning tea amidst towering Satinay trees.

Midday

  • Visit the iconic Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).
  • Relax on pristine white sands, swim in the turquoise waters, or simply soak up the scenery.
  • Lunch included at the lake.

Afternoon

  • Pack up and return to Eastern Beach, driving south along the coastline.
  • Catch the barge back to the mainland at Inskip Point.
  • Drive a short distance back to Freedom Hostel, Rainbow Beach, arriving between 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm.

This tour is people for people with a moderate level of fitness and mobility, who can hike 3-5kms a day over uneven terrain and sandy tracks. Temperatures can be extreme, very high during summer days and very cold during winter nights.
Yes, passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they inform us at least 72 hours prior to the trip commencing. Food for the trip is purchased before commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. Due to the remote nature of our tours, food is basic but plentiful. We can cater for the following dietary requirements: No Pork No Dairy Vegetarian Vegan Gluten Free (& Coeliac)
During your Fraser Island adventure, you’ll sleep in an enclosed, dingo-proof beach-side campsite on K’gari (Fraser Island) in permanent twin-share dome tents. Each tent comes with a pillow, foam camping mat, and sleeping bag. The campsite is specifically set up for tour groups and is managed with respect to the Butchulla people, the traditional owners of K’gari. This lets you immerse yourself in the island’s unspoilt wilderness while still having the essentials for a comfortable overnight stay. Fall asleep under the stars to the sounds of the ocean and wake up surrounded by pristine beaches and lush rainforest.
Mobile coverage will be intermittent. We recommend letting friends and family know you may be out of contact during the tour. Guides are equipped with satellite phones for emergencies only.
Yes – while your guide will take care of most of the meals, you’ll have the chance to get involved with simple daily tasks like setting up camp, meal prep, and tidying up. It’s all part of the shared experience, and your help is always appreciated. Many travelers say that pitching in helps them feel more connected and less like a tourist – it’s all part of the adventure!
