Full Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Rainbow Beach → Lake McKenzie → Beachside Camp

Morning

  • Meet at 7:00 am sharp at Freedom Hostel for a compulsory tour briefing.
  • Receive all essential safety information, get placed into your travel groups, and organise sleeping bag hire or luggage storage.
  • Learn how to safely drive a 4WD on K’gari’s sandy tracks and beaches.

Depart Rainbow Beach

  • Aim to leave Freedom Hostel by 9:30 am.
  • Short 10-minute drive to the barge, followed by a quick 10-minute ferry crossing to K’gari (Fraser Island).
  • Drive approx. 1 hour along the famous 75 Mile Beach to Eurong Beach Resort. Optional stop for coffee or a chocolate croissant (own cost).

Lake McKenzie

  • Continue on to the island’s most iconic destination: Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).
  • Enjoy lunch, a refreshing swim, and time to relax by its crystal-clear water and white silica sand.

Evening

  • Head north along the beach to your campsite, arriving around 3:00 pm.
  • Settle into your dingo-safe tents before enjoying an early dinner, drinks, and a fun night under the stars.

Day 2: Eli Creek → Maheno Shipwreck → Indian Head → Champagne Pools

Morning

  • Fuel up with a quick breakfast for the busiest and most action-packed day.
  • First stop: Eli Creek, perfect for floating, swimming, and soaking up the scenery.

Midday

  • Visit the historic SS Maheno Shipwreck for photos and stories of its past.
  • Continue on to Indian Head, the island’s highest point—keep your eyes peeled for sharks, rays, and whales in the water below.
  • Head to the famous Champagne Pools for a saltwater soak in natural volcanic rock pools.
  • Lunch served at either Champagne Pools or Maheno, depending on tides and conditions.

Evening

  • Return to your beachside camp for dinner, drinks, and another relaxing night.

Day 3: Lake Wabby → Return to Rainbow Beach

Morning

  • Enjoy breakfast, then pack down and clean your campsite.
  • Drive to the starting point of the Lake Wabby walk.
  • Hike across dramatic sand dunes to discover this emerald-green lake—an unforgettable final swim spot.

Afternoon

  • Have lunch before heading down the beach towards the barge.
  • Cross back to the mainland and return to the 4WD shed for unpacking and a quick clean of the vehicles.
  • Arrive back at Freedom Hostel between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm.

This tour is people for people with a moderate level of fitness and mobility, who can hike 3-5kms a day over uneven terrain and sandy tracks. Temperatures can be extreme, very high during summer days and very cold during winter nights.
Yes, passengers with special meal requirements or food allergies MUST ensure they inform us at least 72 hours prior to the trip commencing. Food for the trip is purchased before commencement and special requirements cannot be catered for after departing. Due to the remote nature of our tours, food is basic but plentiful. We can cater for the following dietary requirements: No Pork No Dairy Vegetarian Vegan Gluten Free (& Coeliac)
During your Fraser Island adventure, you’ll sleep in an enclosed, dingo-proof beach-side campsite on K’gari (Fraser Island) in permanent twin-share dome tents. Each tent comes with a pillow, foam camping mat, and sleeping bag. The campsite is specifically set up for tour groups and is managed with respect to the Butchulla people, the traditional owners of K’gari. This lets you immerse yourself in the island’s unspoilt wilderness while still having the essentials for a comfortable overnight stay. Fall asleep under the stars to the sounds of the ocean and wake up surrounded by pristine beaches and lush rainforest.
Mobile coverage will be intermittent. We recommend letting friends and family know you may be out of contact during the tour. Guides are equipped with satellite phones for emergencies only.
Yes – while your guide will take care of most of the meals, you’ll have the chance to get involved with simple daily tasks like setting up camp, meal prep, and tidying up. It’s all part of the shared experience, and your help is always appreciated. Many travelers say that pitching in helps them feel more connected and less like a tourist – it’s all part of the adventure!
