You get to experience the region’s only dedicated swim-with-whales experience during the humpback season from July to October. This unique experience lets you swim with the majestic humpback whales. Even if swimming isn’t possible, the tour provides a personal whale-watching experience in Hervey Bay, the world’s best humpback destination.

Trip Overview

Your trip starts from the floating Dive Centre office at the Boat Club Marina. You will be accompanied by an experienced local skipper and a friendly PADI dive crew.

The whale season runs from mid-July to late October. From mid-July, the cruise focuses on maximising your chances to swim with the whales. The swim is done via a 20m mermaid line connected to the stern of the vessel. Please note that you will only snorkel with the whales to keep them comfortable. From mid-September, more mothers and calves arrive, making for great whale watching.

Swimming is condition-dependent and only done with the right whales, on their terms. You will be provided all equipment, including wetsuits, masks, snorkels, and safety gear.

Please note that you only interact with whales that are comfortable. Whales have personalities, and sometimes they just want to be left alone, which we need to respect.

Highlight

This tour is not suitable for children under 4 years old. Children under 8 years are not permitted to swim with the whales and a parental guardian must remain with them at all times through out the tour. Departure Info

  • The tour departs at 9:30 AM from the Boat Club Marina with an estimated duration of 5.5 hours.
  • The estimated return time is 3:30 PM.

FAQ

All online bookings cancelled will incur a 10% administration fee. Bookings cancelled 10 days prior will incur a 20% administration fee. Bookings cancelled 48hrs prior incur a 50% administration fee. Bookings cancelled less than 24hrs prior forfeit the total cost of the booking.
Swimming with the whales cannot be guaranteed.
Children under the age of 8 years will not be permitted to swim with the whales
This tour requires a minimum number of 8 persons. If the minimum number is not met HBDC reserves the right to cancel the tour.
The Whale Swim Tour is a guided marine tour within the Great Sandy Marine Park which is strictly regulated and so all instructions by the guides must be adhered too. The Whale Swim Tour is subject to change without notice, due to tides and weather conditions. Aquatic activities cannot be guaranteed and dependant on conditions and at the skippers discretion. Permits restrict all operators from swimming with calves.
All guests participating in the Whale Swim tours will be required to fill out a medical questionnaire to ensure that you have no medical problems (past or present) or taking any medication that may be contradictory to snorkelling. Some medical conditions and / or medication may prevent you from participating in the Whale Swim activity. If you are unsure about this, please discuss this with our instructors or guides at the time of booking.
Our tour is alcohol free due to the types of activities we undertake.
