Fish Rock Cave is arguably Australia’s best shark and cave dive. Fish Rock Cave has been voted in the world’s top 50 dive sites and is the only true ocean cave dive in Australia. Located just 2km offshore, Fish Rock Cave is a 125m cave – or swim through – which goes from one side to the other of Fish Rock. The shallow entrance is 12m below the surface and the deep entrance is 24m below the surface. Other than the cave itself, a highlight of this dive site is the large population of grey nurse sharks who live here all year round. In summer, the grey nurse sharks can often be seen resting in the shallow entrance of the cave, which is fringed by pink gorgonian corals making for some spectacular photos. Around the outside of the island, water depth varies from 15-30m with the deep gutters forming a natural aggregation area for sharks and many other marine creatures that reside here. This dive experience caters to scuba divers of all experience levels. Certified divers can book day tours with 2 dives, or multiple day tours and dives, including accommodation.
Fish Rock Cave, located at South West Rocks is the only ocean cave dive site in Australian waters where large schools of Grey Nurse Sharks reside. Swimming literally through a mountain cave that starts at a depth of approximately 24mts you emerge at the end in 12mts of water surrounded by Manta Rays, Eagle Ray, Turtles and a wide variety of pelagic fish.
This dive is recognized, published and protected for its significant value in the critical habitat protection program of NSW, truly one of Australia’s ‘best’ and ‘must do’ dives sites.
Getting up close and personal with these endangered grey nurse sharks is very achievable as they cruise back and forth along the sandy channel of the entrance of the cave. The longer you stay still the closer they will come to you. The cave itself consists of a numerous horizontal and vertical turns, every pocket filled with unique and diverse marine life.
We know from personal experience 1-day may not be nearly enough to truly appreciate these graceful sharks and the cave itself, therefore 2 days is highly recommended, all dives are guided.
Your day will consist of double dives; the sites are selected to suit the experience of divers and daily conditions. Both Fish Rock Cave and Grey Nurse Sharks are given high priority, as these sites are the reason why divers travel from far and wide. Fish Rock Cave dive caters to all levels of diving experience with professional Dive Masters and Instructors guiding all dives.
